"Wow, quite a race. But even before the
race itself there was excitement going on.
Two expert league servers puts some load
on our server and with 10 seconds left in
warmup I noticed people complaining about
lag. It appeared the webserver process was
hogging up most of the CPU power on our
server, causing lag in the game. So with the
race countdown starting I had to kill the
process on the server and quickly switch
back to the game not to miss the start. Yes,
being an admin can be stressful at times ;)
I hopped into my car and had a crappy
start as the lights went out pretty early.
So I lost a few positions, but was able to
make up for them by being able to avoid the
huge crash after the back straight. At that
point I found myself in 8th position and
right behind Walter. After our long battle
in the last race there was no doubt the same
would happen again.
Even though I had filled up my car with a
large amount of fuel to do a very long first
stint I was a little bit faster than Walter.
I kept making up time in the slow corners,
but Walter was running much less downforce.
Although I tried it was simply impossible to
pass him. Numerous times I was right behind
him in his slipstream on the straight, but
with my lack of topspeed there was nothing I
could do.
I continued to put pressure on Walter,
but he never made the slightest mistake. I
was also forced to keep close and suffer
from his dirty air through the corners as I
couldn't put myself at a safe distance
because of Tictac behind me all the time.
Without having Walter's slipstream on the
straight there was the risk that he could
pass me. So I was pretty much stuck in that
position.
Lap 23 Tictac finally went into the pits
and I could take a little bit more distance
from Walter while still being on his tail to
keep the pressure. I was sure to be able to
pass him in the pits as I had enough fuel to
go 26 laps. But when he still hadn't entered
the pits at lap 24 I was afraid he might be
on a crazy one-stop strategy or could go
even longer than me. Luckily for me, just
like in Bahrain, he spun right in front of
me. Again it was a close call, but I was
finally ahead.
Lap 26 I entered the pits and came out
right in front of Caner and was able to stay
ahead in the first corner. Caner tried to
pass me a few corners later and we entered
side-by-side but I was able to keep the
lead. During all of this my girlfriend was
doing a cheerleader-like "Gimme a T", "Gimme
a Y", "Gimme a G"... right next to me so it
was nothing short of a miracle I didn't
crash :)
The rest of the race was reasonably easy.
I kept pushing quite hard, doing consistent
lap times, there was no way I could keep up
with the guys in front and they were too far
ahead already, and Caner was at a constant
10 seconds behind me. So the 4th place I was
in would be the best I could do.
After my second stop (where I almost
forgot to enter the pits...) Caner started
to close the gap. From 10 seconds he came
back to 7 seconds in a few laps, but then
either crashed or blew up his engine. With
45 seconds behind the top 3 and 45 seconds
in front of tictac I could finally relax a
bit more. When I saw JuanFran's car in
flames I knew it was time to start saving my
engine and brakes, now virtually being on
the podium.
I had lapped Cash but he was closing in
behind me again as I was going a lot slower.
What I didn't know was that he was having
graphical problems, especially when cars
were right in front of him. When I almost
wanted to let him past he had made a mistake
already. So my apologies to my team mate,
but luckily he was able to keep his position
in the final laps.
In the end a great result. 3rd place was
more than I could have hoped for. And
congrats to Ricardo winning the race, his
first in EXP and his first for LRT. After
his long streak of bad luck I'm happy he was
finally able to take the top step of the
podium. With LRT scoring some good points
here I hope we can fight back and regain our
position from Olympic in the team
championship.
The season is getting along quite nicely
and I'm looking forward to Monaco."
